The common belief among engineers is that a message queue inherently provides end-to-end delivery guarantees simply by acting as an intermediary buffer. We deploy a broker, successfully publish messages, and implicitly assume that these messages are now reliably en route to their final processing. This view, however, often misunderstands the nuanced contract. A message queue, fundamentally, ensures robust storage and delivery to its immediate subscribers, but it does not magically extend that guarantee across the entire distributed system. The reframe is to recognize that “at-least-once” or “exactly-once” semantics are never solely a property of the queue itself; they are a sophisticated emergent behavior of the entire message flow, encompassing idempotent producers, diligent broker persistence, resilient consumers with explicit acknowledgment logic, and careful handling of transient network conditions. The profound insight is that neglecting this holistic perspective can lead to insidious production issues where messages are silently lost, duplicated, or processed out of order, transforming a valuable buffering mechanism into a false sense of security regarding distributed data integrity.
